Mayan town worth to visit. Bike to the different areas and claim one of the fewest pyramids that allow you to do it.

Coba is an archaeological site of the Mayan Culture located 110 km from Playa del Carmen, dated between 500 to 900 A.D. It had many temples among which Nohoch Mul Pyramid has survived. Construction of the site continued until the XIV Century. The meaning of Coba is "Moisture of Water". From the top of Coba´s Pyramid, the jungle looks like a living green carpet. Because Coba does not have as many tourists as Chichen Itza or the ruins of Tulum, you can still climb some of the structures for a totally different and unique perspective. When on the site, you can walk through a path in the jungle, hire a bike taxi, or rent a bicycle. Around the site you will find stone carved monuments called Stelae, some of them depict women, suggesting the city had many female rulers. There are 2 well preserved ball courts which were used for playing the traditional Mayan ballgame called Ollamatiztli. There is also a beautiful Cenote in Coba where you can dip in and refresh yourself. Cenotes are underground sinkholes filled with amazingly transparent, fresh water found all over the region. I suggest you bring tennis shoes, mosquito repellent, swimming suit, and plenty of water so you stay hydrated while climbing the 120 steps to the top of the Pyramid, and when coming down, hold yourself to the rope in the middle of the Pyramid for more safety. Hope you enjoy the visit!!!!!
