Located just outside the small city of Cañas along the Inter-Americana Highway is Las Pumas Rescue Center (Centro Rescate Las Pumas). Las Pumas provides a temporary, or sometimes permanent, home for wild cats and other animals that have been injured, rescued, orphaned, or confiscated in the illegal pet trade. Like many rescue centers, this one began with the passion of one individual and grew.

About an hour and a half away, near Cañas, there is a shelter that rescues, rehabilitates and releases animals. They specialize in wild cats. However not all animals are able to be released in the wild so Las Pumas also provides a safe and humane home for those that cannot. They currently are home to five of the six species of wild cats native to Costa Rica, as well as other permanent residents like monkeys, otter, deer, macaws and parrots. The enclosures are large and mimic the animals’ natural environments. While you can do a self-guided tour, the Center offers free guided tours. These are subject to availability, so you need to reserve in advance by phone or by email. Visitor fees, gift shop purchases and donations help support the foundation’s work. The center isn’t huge but if you’re in the area for rafting or waterfalls, it’s certainly worth a stop. The cats are fed at 2:30pm so that’s a good time to visit to see them active. Bring water and bug spray. Visit their website to learn more about the important work they do at the Rescue Center and sanctuary to save wildlife and educate the public: www.centrorescatelaspumas.org.

Just 20 to 25 min. away driving, at this +30 year old Wildlife Rescue Center you can see jaguars, pumas, other felines and local wild animals. Inexpensive and worth seeing. It is NOT a zoo, it is a rescue center, which means that the animals you will see are there only because, for specific reasons, these animals can not be returned to their natural environment.
