Listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1989, this magnificent monastery is one of the finest and most impressive examples of Cistercian architecture in Europe. Although it was built almost 900 years ago, the monastery still preserves the set of its mediaeval buildings. It was finished in 1178, but monks didn’t move in until 1223, when the monastery had become one of the richest and most powerful abbeys in Portugal. It is widely believed that 999 monks lived in the monastery in that time and that masses were constantly celebrated without a break.

The town of Batalha grew alongside the Mosteiro da Batalha, one of the absolute masterpieces of Gothic art, and one of the most impressive monuments in Portugal. This Monastery is UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, and proof of the devotion and gratitude of D. João I for the victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota, which assured him the throne and guaranteed independence for Portugal, in 1385. From the several monastic dependencies, the Unfinished Chapels, the Royal Cloister and the Chapter’s House are a must-see, but the magnificent Church and the Founder’s Chapel are most definitely a highlight of the visit, proving the exceptional value of this iconic monument of outstanding beauty.

The Shrine at Fátima is one of the most important landmarks in the Marian worship, drawing pilgrims from all over the world. Not even unbelievers can remain indifferent when confronted by the Shrine’s grandiosity, spirituality and symbolism. The location of the Shrine of Fátima, at Cova da Iria, had until 1917 been an unknown place in the municipality of Ourém, in the parish of Fátima. That year, a religious event changed its history and importance forever, when three little shepherds, witnessed successive apparitions of Our Lady of the Rosary, the development of the village boomed from then on. Every month, especially on the 12th and 13th, thousands of pilgrims come to Fátima guided by their faith. They set out from different parts of the country, many of them making the journey on foot, following rural lanes and tracks. In order to facilitate this movement, a set of four Fátima Ways – the Tagus Way, the Northern Way, the Nazaré Way and the Coastal Way - have been signposted and can easily be followed using the markers on the ground, even by those with little knowledge of the region.

São Martinho do Porto is a friendly village overlooking a famous shell shaped bay with a very narrow entrance from the sea. Because of this, the water in the bay is very calm, which makes it ideal for a day at the beach with young children. It is also very nice to walk along the bay. Starting at the port you can walk either on the street or on the beach, then from restaurant O Farol there is a boardwalk that takes you through the biggest dunes in Portugal (almost 50 meter high) across the river into Salir do Porto, where you can then hike along the coast
