Local restaurant a few minutes from the house. A traditional churrasqueira - a restaurant that barbecues meat. It is delicious, cheap and rated by some as the best in the Algarve! Try the frango (chicken), the sobremesa de casa (house dessert) and the “Tres Delicias do Algarve” (carob, fig and almond cake).

Neighbourhoods

The nearest village to Casa Veronica dates to 1358. Typical of rural villages of the eastern Algarve, Moncarapacho is charming and unexploited by tourism. Moncarapacho is a beautiful rural village with cobbled streets and interesting architecture. Located off the beaten track, it is surrounded by fields of Algarve staples; citrus, fig, almond, carob and pomegranate. The village has a very relaxed and friendly way. Alongside the main church is a square where you can enjoy a drink or a meal. The town offers a couple of good restaurants and pavement cafes. We have enjoyed eating at Colibri (R. do Prior Simas 14, 8700-082). Don’t miss Moncarapacho’s monthly market (first Sunday of the month - check ahead with regards to Covid scheduling). Expect to find fruit, veg, fish, clothes, local produce and more.

City/town information

Olhão, ("oll-yow") is one of the largest ports in the Algarve. It is a historic town that developed around the fishing industry. In 1882, the first canning factory opened tinning sardines and tuna; an industry that quickly spread to become the Algarve's main source of income. Olhão is 15 minutes drive from Casa Veronica and is a lovely mix of historic vs modern, tourism vs local. At the local seafood market you can buy seafood as well as local produce. After exploring the market sit back and enjoy a beer while watching the tide ebb and flow. Look out for the Olhão Summer Seafood Festival and traditional festivals such as the Procissão do Senhor dos Passos (Procession of the Lord of the Steps) and the Blessing of the Sea. Olhão has many restaurants and bars, the best restaurants seem to be on the streets in the old part of town.

The Algarve is spoilt for beaches – its long coastline offers golden sandy beaches some with hidden coves, limestone caves and grottoes. Refer to the map, The western coast experiences fiercer seas and stronger winds (good for the surfers) and the eastern coast is more suitable for families with children, with it’s gentler waves and warmer waters. In the middle, the islands of the Ria Formosa are mostly accessible by boat, great for a summer trip (pages 7-9). At the villa there is a guide called “Beaches in the Algarve”. Please don't remove this guide from the villa. If you take the A22 (the fastest route west) don't forget it’s a toll road. After your journey pay your toll at the Post Office. The beaches nearest to Casa Veronica that do not require boat access are Faro and Fuseta . For more information about Algarve beaches visit Algarve guide to Beaches. If you are keen to venture in the other direction Spain is not far away either!

The Pousada Palacio (The Pink Palace) in Estoi is famous for its neo-Baroque and neoRococo features including the decoration of its plaster ceilings, pavilions and beautiful French-inspired gardens. A local aristocrat started to build the palace in 1840, but it took two changes of ownership and huge finances and was not completed until 1909. The palace is now a luxury hotel. Due to Covid 19 the house is closed to the public, but you can still enjoy the magic of the gardens. Enter through the village of Estoi, look for a pink wall and a gate near the church). Please check directly with the hotel regarding restaurant bookings due to Covid. Food is more expensive than local restaurants, but its delicious and the service is excellent. Sit back with a cocktail and enjoy the great view from the outdoor terrace. Nearby Estoi is a lovely old town to explore. Canastra sells local produce such as carob and honey. Buy supplies for dinner at Talho (butchers) or next door at the Peixaria do Mercardo (fishmongers). Some weekends there is a local market.
