The name is Castelo de Porto de Mos.....The first defensive fortifications date back from the period of Roman occupation. This primitive defense would have been increased in the following centuries, successively by Visigoths and Muslims. Porto de Mos became a strategic point in the defense of Leiria and Coimbra during the Christian Reconquest of the Iberian peninsula. With the encouragement of the settlement under the reign of D. Sancho I (1185 - 1211), the town prospered, and its defense received important works of improvement. The defensive structure of the castle was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1755 and, again, in 1909. It was classified as a National Monument in 1910.

In 1964 a group of quarry workers in the Serra dos Candeeiros heard a strange noise, as if a stone had fallen into a very deep abyss. This was how the Alvados caves were discovered, more than 150 million years after their formation in the Middle Jurassic age, when the dinosaurs populated this region. The entrance is at an altitude of 440m, and the depth inside reaches 100m, in a succession of rooms adorned with stalagmites and stalactites forming fairytale figures. Appropriate lighting, steps, stepping-stones, background music and the pleasant temperature of 17 degrees Celsius invite you to enter the wonderful kingdom of one of the finest of Nature's works.

Neighbourhoods

The long sandy half-moon shaped beach, which is also the town’s sea front, is known for its grandeur and for the brightly-coloured awnings that decorate the white sandy beaches, contrasting with the blue of the water. This is the beach in Portugal that retains the more colourful fishing traditions, and it’s not uncommon to encounter fishmongers who still wear the traditional seven skirts. At the end of the afternoon on Saturdays during the summer months, don’t miss sitting on the seawall to watch the fascinating “Arte Xávega” (Drag Nets) spectacle, in which nets laden with fish arrive from the sea and the women scream out their wares for sale. If you don’t understand the words, don’t worry – they use codes that often only they know. Facing the sea on the right, you will see an impressive headland. This is Sítio, which provides one of the most famous views of the Portuguese coast. It is a 318 metre rock face with a sheer drop to the sea, and is reached on foot by the bravest, or by going up the funicular. At the top sits the Ermida da Memória chapel, famous for the legend of the miracle that Our Lady made to prevent the horse of the nobleman, D. Fuas Roupinho, leaping over the precipice. True or not, the Suberco Belvedere shows the imprint left in the rock by one of the horse’s hooves that foggy morning in 1182. Sítio also houses the Shrine to Our Lady of Nazaré and not far away, the Dr. Joaquim Manso Museum for more details about the traditions of Nazaré. If you have the time, walk from Sítio across Pedralva Park, to Pederneira, a natural viewpoint with an unmissable view over the Nazaré coast. These days, Nazaré’s major attractions are the waves and surfing, thanks to the "Nazaré Canyon", a submarine geomorphological phenomenon that allows the formation of perfect giant waves. It is the largest underwater canyon in Europe, about 170 kilometres along the coast, reaching a depth of 5,000 metres. The Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara received worldwide publicity when, in 2011, rode the biggest beach-breaking wave in the world, about 30 metres high, at Praia do Norte. He won the Billabong XXL Global BigWave Award and entered the Guinness Book of World Records. Like him, surfers from around the world visit Nazaré every year to venture into the sea. The beach also attracts sunbathers, who provide a great audience to appreciate the stunts of the young surfers. Take the opportunity of a casual stroll through the narrow streets perpendicular to the beach to get to know Nazaré better. Take a break in one of the restaurants to enjoy a plate of fresh seafood, grilled fish or an appetising bouillabaisse. And in the evening, there’s nothing like enjoying the setting sun on any terrace overlooking the sea, while the lights come on and night falls.

Arts and Culture

This town is one of the most important catholic shrines in the world dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Fatima’s Sanctuary welcomes millions of pilgrims and tourists from all over the world. Fatima’s fame is due to the Apparitions of Our Lady of the Rosary (also known as Our Lady of Fatima) that appeared to three shepherd children of Fatima; Lucia dos Santos and her two younger cousins, Francisco and Jacinta. Between May and October of 1917, the three children witnessed several apparitions. The last one, on October 13th, was confirmed by a miracle witnessed by 60,000 people known in the catholic world as “the day the sun danced.” Fatima now attracts thousands of pilgrims from all over the world, particularly on the pilgrimage days in May and October. Moreover, the large torch-light processions in the evening are particularly impressive, often led by Cardinals and Bishops. The pilgrims gather in Cova de Iria, an enormous plaza where a little chapel was built and where the Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared. Around the plaza are a considerable number of shops and stalls selling various religious articles. On the far side of the plaza rises the great basilica, built in a neo-classical style with a central tower 65 meters high. The construction of the basilica began on May 13, 1928. In the basilica are the tombs of two of the three visionaries, siblings Francisco and Jacinta Marto. They died in 1919 and 1920 respectively and were beatified in 1970. The third seer, Lucia dos Santos, died in 2005.
