Sightseeing
Baleal was a whaling island in the Middle Ages (‘Baleia’ means whale). The area between Baleal and Peniche was ocean, the bay of Atouguia da Baleia. Peniche only connected to the continent in the XVI century. Some decades ago, the connection to Baleal island still closed with the high tide. A time when donkeys transported goods and water between the mainland and Baleal, and electricity and piped water still hadn’t arrived. Nowadays, it is still a magic place, unique in the Portugal coast. 1 km from the studio.

Rua Josefa de ÓbidosÓbidos is one of the most picturesque and well preserved medieval villages in Portugal. It had already been settled prior to the Romans’ arrival in the Iberian Peninsula, and it prospered after being chosen by the royal family. Until 1883, Óbidos was exclusive property of the Queens of Portugal. Only 20 min from Baleal!

For trekking, you can search for "O Covão dos Musaranhos" restaurant (30 min ride from Baleal), and explore the area along the lagoon. Alternatively, the north part of the lagoon, starting in Foz do Arelho is an even better choice.
