Nestled in the Nilgiri Mountains at 8,000ft, just below Doddabetta Peak, this self-catering apartment with a fully equipped kitchen has a master bedroom and a sleeping loft. Surrounded by reserve forest and tea plantations, the view is stunning. On the same property is the large house, Stumpfields, which also hosts guests when the owners are travelling, and a smaller apartment, Ivy just below Bilberry, that hosts two guests. While each house is fully private, the gardens and grounds are shared.

Just 7 kilometers outside of Ooty town, this property is close to all the major tourist highlights but is secluded and remote at the same time. Away from the hustle and bustle of Ooty town, Bilberry Cottage is a family-friendly peaceful retreat, overlooking tea estates, wild forest, and mountain ridges.

We have staff here during the day to support guests, and at night our staff are only a phone call away should there be any questions or concerns. We have well-equipped kitchens so you can cook your own food. While we previously stocked many spices and sugar, please note as of Feb 1st, 2022 we will no longer be doing that. We will only provide the basics, salt, pepper and oil. If you would rather hire one of our ladies to cook for you please bring your own groceries and look at our" BOOK A COOK" option found in our house manual.

We urge only resilient, nature loving, independent, resourceful, adventuresome people to book a holiday here. Our property is not suitable for guests who have major medical concerns, who are unable to walk 300 meters up a hill or who are very elderly. Its a wild and steep terrain, and at night you will not hear the noise of traffic, but rather the sound of wind in the trees, owls in the dark, rain on the roofs, bird and animal calls. While the evenings may have firelight, candles and electricity, once the lights are out, it will be pitch dark all around. When skies are clear the stars and moon are perhaps the most beautiful you will ever see. Its something about being in the mountains 8,000 ft high, with no pollution covering the atmosphere. Other times of the year, especially in the monsoon, its just incredibly dark.

The mountains of Ooty are cool year round, especially at night. While the indoors are warm and cozy, the mountain air outside is brisk! For those who want room service, wifi, TV's, a restaurant, and 24-hour staff service we recommend you book a hotel in the town of Ooty.

Come here ready to unplug from emails and the internet, TV's and movies, and try curling up by the wood stove with a cup of hot chocolate and a good book. Let your body and mind re-set and re-charge as you decompress and let the nature around you remind you there is a different way to live.

We live in the wilderness, completely secluded with no other houses around, except Stumpfields and Ivy. However, since there are usually other guests on our property and staff present in the day time, you won't feel completely isolated. At the end of our drive, along a main road is a small village where the local tea-pickers reside. You can catch a glimpse of this village from the balcony of the cottage. We are in the middle of a totally undeveloped 10 acre piece of land that is surrounded by and overlooks government reserve forest. Our access to trails, extraordinary views, glimpses of wild animals and wide variety of birds in this high altitude rain forset and peace and solitude make our place unique among the overly commercialized, over crowded tourist hotels and inns in and around Ooty. We take pride in our efforts to protect the environment around our house. We keep our grounds and the surrounding forest and pastures around us clean with absolutely zero litter. We ask that you help us keep it pristine.

Mala and Greg moved to Ooty in 2005. They bought land that overlooked mountain ranges and tea plantations and designed and built Stumpfields. Greg and Mala love peace and quiet, love the wilderness and enjoy hiking with their dogs, gardening and designing new projects! Lord of the Rings is their favorite trilogy, classical literature is Mala's favorite genre, while Greg prefers John Grisham. They love choosing veggies from their organic garden, and eating healthy. Greg and Mala have lived and traveled all over the world. They came to India in 2000 in order to help rescue girls under the age of 18 who have been forcibly trafficked into commercial sex exploitation. In 2006 they started an NGO called Freedom Firm. Check it out online if you get the chance! A portion of the income from the vacation rental of all 3 listings, Stumpfields, Bilberry Cottage and Ivy Cottage goes to the work of Freedom Firm.

However, please note they are only there in the day between 9:30 am and 7pm. They are all very helpful and will answer all your questions.
