Approx. 2km from the apartment. Leave the apartment and walk up the first road to your left. This is a steep road with sharp turns but several magnificent lookout points overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and SMP. Continue along Est. do Facho until you reach a red roofed townhouse complex on your left, make a right on the adjacent road Camino Del Gralha. Follow to the end and it will turn into a gravel road. Walk along until you see the sign for Praia da Gralha. This gravel road extends beyond the Grahla and further to Praia do Salgado with more lookout points. Amazing trails branch off, explore and enjoy.

Follow the directions to Gralha but continue further to Saldado. The waves on both beaches are much stronger than SMP. The city of Nazare is visible beyond Praia do Salgado. This beach is about 6km walking from the apartment. If you wish send a message and I will provide more detailed walking instructions. This walk is spectacular as you go off the gravel road and the views of the Atlantic are well worth the hike.

This town in Portugal’s Centro Region is rather low-key, except for one blockbuster monument: The spellbinding Monastery of Alcobaça. In 2007 this World Heritage Gothic complex was declared one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. The monument is the final resting place for the 14th-century King Pedro I and his star-crossed lover, Inês de Castro, whose lives were haunted by tragedy. From apartment best to go by car.

Tomar is incredibly pretty. While standing in the middle of the town square, you’ll want to slowly revolve and snap pictures of every corner, including the beautifully tiled pavement. Next it’s time to take a short walk uphill. The Tomar Castle and Convent of Christ are the area’s shining jewels catching visitors’ attention from their hilltop perch. Built in the 12th century, these medieval buildings incorporate a mix of Portuguese Manueline architecture (the signature style from the Age of Discoveries) with Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and hints of other styles. The castle walls actually wrap around the convent and it’s common to call the entire complex the Convent of Christ. In Tomar, charming and centuries-old chapels can be found on each side of town and the rural homes, some white-washed and others made of stone, add to the traditional feel.

Santa Ana Chapel Trail, one of the oldest constructions in the county, may have been built in the twelfth century and was used as a place of prayer and farewell for fishermen, where family members would go to see them leave and arrive, so they have a meaning, especially for locals. You can see Santa Ana from the patio of the apartment if you look across the bay towards the Atalatic perched atop the cliff. Walk along the trail, explore and discover this beautiful place full of tradition and symbolism. Walk along the beach towards Salir do Porto, cross the boardwalk to the community center and wrap around to the back. There you will find a path, at the top of the hill there is a sign post directing you to the chapel. On your way back if you feel good and want to see more continue past the sign post and explore the many trails overlooking the Atlantic, peaceful and splendid views. This hike is 10km there and back so go prepared.

Train

The train station in SMP links you to almost everywhere. Search train schedule at www.cp.pt. Simply type in your departure town and destination to find times and costs. Very user friendly. If the station has no ticket booth simply board the train and pay the conductor on board.

Taxi

We recommend Rui Taxi. His wife and son all drive taxi and make a great team. They have a mini van for larger groups and if one is not available another will be, they also live local. They offer a flat rate pick up or drop off to Lisboa airport. At the time we wrote this its approx. 100 Euro They are also familiar with the apartment, mention Paolo or Adrienne and the address. tel- 925 -280-301 email- taxirui.transfers@gmail.com

Car Rental

Car Rental is available in Caldas da Rainha, a 5 minute train journey and then a walk to the car rental office. Europecar and Guerin are operating at the time we wrote this section. If you are going to rent a car it may be wise to pre book as the local rentals are quite busy.

Shoes

A good pair of walking shoes are recommended to take advantage of the many walking trails around SMP. Coastal walk are breathtaking and not to be missed.

Light jacket for Walking

Have a light jacket ready if you are walking the trails as most of the trails are in altitude so the wind may be stronger than down by the apartment.

Back Pack

Sao Martinho do Porto is very much a walkable town and a car is not required for local enjoyment and experience. A backpack is most handy when shopping at the local markets or just enjoying the day.
