Most people visit Nazare for the beach, but there are many unique sights that can easily fill a day of sightseeing in the historical fishing village and the Sítio headland. Within the town are pretty, cobbled back streets, traditional beach shops and a promenade leading down to the fishing harbour. A funicular railway connects the town to the Sítio district, boasting some pretty fantastic views of the Atlantic ocean and Nazare’s world famous beaches. At the western tip of the Sítio headland is the Farol da Nazare lighthouse and the Miguel Arcanjo Fort. This area is all about extreme surfing and the Praia do Norte waves. Inside the fort you will find informative exhibits about the surfing culture of the region, and including surfboards and pictures of the extreme surfing.

Home to the world-famous Monastery of Alcobaça, a UNESCO World Heritage. One of the most popular things to see inside are the tombs of King Pedro I and his mistress, Inês de Castro, who was assassinated in 1355. I love also enjoying lunch or afternoon coffee with convent pastries in one of the restaurants/cafes in the lovely square in front of the monastery.

Aveiro is commonly known as the little Venice of Portugal. It's distinguished by its canals navigated by colorful boats (barcos moliceiros), traditionally used to harvest seaweed. Not far from its core, known for art nouveau buildings, is the Cathedral of Aveiro, with its prominent bell tower. The Museu de Aveiro, housed in a former convent, has a lavish tomb made of marble.

Not something you’d expect to see in Portugal, but this is a spectacular garden with lots of large size Asian and African themed sculptures, and many walking paths to explore. It belongs to Quinta da Bacalhôa, which also has a restaurant and their own wine shop.
