Excursions on the mainland

If you like to see the "real deal" of the ancient Mayan cities, spend some time on the mainland
As big as Chichen Itza, but not that touristy and commercialized. This is a 2 day excursion. Feel free to ask Tati for details.

By foot (in downtown), car, bike or colectivo

Enjoy walking Cozumel downtown, as most of the attractions are centrally located. Rent a car for an Island Tour and to do your groceries. Riding a bicycle - on our safe bicycle lanes – is super fun. Especially from our house and south. If you feel adventurous and want to really mingle with the friendly locals, hop on a "colectivo". They are white small vans; you hop on and off as you wish. There are lots of routes - displayed on their front window. They serve all of downtown and all of them stop at Chedraui. Prices are in pesos!!

Important info about scooter rentals

We very strongly advise against renting a scooter as we see lots of terrible and deadly accidents happen here all the time! Please rent a a car instead :) We like to recommend: https://www.fiestacarrental.com/ Ask for Veronica. They are located right at the airport. Or a bit more economic is: http://www.islacozumel.net/services/isis/ Ask for Margarita or Angel.

Explore Cozumel´s beaches

We love Playa San Martin on the East shore, Punta Sur Beach (the last one of the street. No need to pay the expensive beach day pass) past the lighthouse, and for snorkeling the private beach club Buccanos (they charge an entrance fee).

Visit Cozumel's Mayan Ruins: San Gervasio.

We actually like it more for a nice walk and birdwatching than the ruins... the bmost spectacular ruins are on the main land

Sun protection

These days we have all realized how important it is to protect the natural waters of the earth. Using an Eco- friendly, reef-safe sun lotion is a great way to do just that. My favorite SPF50 can be bought at https://web.facebook.com/zerowastecozumel This, a hat and UV-blocking swimsuit/swimshirts protect you and our delicate reefs.

Can you drink the (tap) water in Cozumel?

Unless your host, restaurant or resort purifies their own tap water system and takes assurances to let its guests know this fact, exercise caution. In Casa del Jardin we dont! However - for your convenience - we offer puriefied bottled water upon your arrival. Tap water in Mexico is generally not drinkable for tourists, and is often a culprit in inconvenient gastro-intestinal illnesses while travelers are here on vacation. Stick with bottled water (even the locals often drink it), and try to keep your mouth closed in the shower, too.

Is Cozumel safe?

While no place in the world is 100% safe for all visitors all the time, Cozumel has low crime rates that should alleviate any fears you have of visiting. Of course, you should still take proper safety precautions. Use your common sense and lock the house (and car) when you´re leaving. Simply don´t create opportunities for thieves and to alleviate concerns about petty crime, carry as little money as you can. I live in Cozumel for 15 years (8 of them in the direct neighborhood of Casa del Jardin) and have never had any problem. Cozumel is the safest island in the Carribbean!
