Seafood

Spicy, fresh and frequently swimming in lime juice
Mi Compa Chava used to be a ghost kitchen without an actual physical location for eating, only open on weekends and pickup only. However they now have physical location in Zacatecas and Tonalá. The place is usually packed, reservations are booked months in advance, and the dishes are large enough to warrant going with a at least a couple of friends The food is unbelievably good.

Strong contender for being the neighborhood’s most beloved institution, Contramar has been serving some of the best seafood dishes in the city for decades now. The menu draws from several classic pacific coast dishes, coupled with fresh ingredients perfectly prepared. We love the Tiritas Zihuatanejo, the Contramar Seared Tuna and the Pescado a la Talla. Deserts are terrific as well. Contramar only opens for lunch, and is famous for its sobremesas. Be prepared to wait a while if you show up without a reservation.

La Docena offers amazing meals for both lunch and dinner in a modern cantina setting. If you love shellfish as much as beef it is one of your best bets in Roma. It’s fairly close to the apartment, and everything on the menu is terrific but be prepared to wait a while for a table.

Fisher’s is kind of a guilty pleasure for us. The ambience is tacky, the music is always both dreadful and loud, and there’s something slightly manufactured about the dishes, but everything is so tasty so we keep going back. Breakfasts are probably even better than lunches and far cheaper, although the OJ is not freshly squeezed which should be an embarrassment for any self respecting Mexican restaurant. Anyway, we love the smoked salmon carpaccio, the rock spicy shrimp, the huevos petroleros, the huevos rotos and the flan de cajeta.

The proverbial Sinaloa style seafood joint is a little further away than most of the other offerings in this list, but it’s worth the visit if you like seafood and would like to try something different. Some of the dishes can be very spicy so be sure to ask your waiter before ordering if you can’t handle spicy food. We love the aguachiles (both green and red variations, but be advised the red sauce is intensely hot), the pescado zarandeado, the zarandeado shrimps, the marlin flautas, the shrimp tacos, the governor tacos and the manta shrimps.

Hailing from Tijuana, this a pretty good cevicheria that’s very close to the apartment. Tasty seafood dishes that are fresh and mildly spicy in a relaxed setting. Not exactly cheap, but not outrageously expensive either. We love the pescado a la talla, the Cachetada de Pulpo, and the Red Snapper Tostada.

I have to admit I’m not the biggest Pialadero enthusiast, but all my friends love it so much that I feel like I must be the one in the wrong. Classic Guadalajara style seafood prepared in a relaxed setting, el Pialadero is our go to place to cure a hangover. Keep in mind that our idea of hangover food swirls around a bucket of raw shrimp cured in lime juice and drenched in hot sauce with a spiced up beer & Clamato cocktail, so it might not be your usual remedy. El Pialadero is also a great spot to get some Tortas Ahogadas, but tread carefully with the spicier versions.

Fresh seafood in a lively atmosphere on one of Roma’s busiest blocks, Campobaja can get a little too hipsterish if you're not interested in socializing, but the food is always good.

From Maximo Bistrot’s Chef Lalo García comes this amazing seafood joint where everything’s tasty and fresh, keeping with the same standards of quality and attention to detail as Maximo. The place is very small so make a reservation or expect to wait an hour or more for a table. Cocktails are also really good, so stumbling hammered from the place is a regular occurrence for patrons. We love the tostadas, fish tacos, ceviches, the fish filets entrees and the mezcal cocktails. Pretty much the entire menu.
