Escape to enchanting Lamu, step back in time and into historic, charming Maridhiya House. Set in a quiet, unspoilt area of the old town, a short walk from the seafront and a short boat ride from gorgeous beaches, Maridhiya has been renovated with care and skill to create a beautiful, comfortable home. The house comes complete with the services of our helpful staff who will be pleased to collect you from the airport and to shop, cook and guide you around town and island. New for 2019 - wi-fi!

A classic Lamu town house dating back to the 18th Century, Maridhiya has been renovated and modernised with skill and attention-to-detail and retains its many historic decorative features and authentic Swahili atmosphere. It sits in a particularly peaceful and unspoilt area of Lamu’s historic Stone Town.

The house is entered from a traditional 'Daka' entrance porch with ornate carved teak wood front door. The impressive Ground Floor Reception Galleries and Kitchen have 13 ft (4 metre) high ceilings and a wealth of meticulously-restored decorative plaster work and ornate 'Zidaka' wall niches.

The large and airy First Floor Living and Dining Room also features high ceilings, traditional Islamic 'Masharabya' window screens, a 6-seater dining table and expansive built-in baraza sofa seats. Also on the First Floor is a Double Bedroom with four-poster bed, en-suite bathroom, ceiling fan, wardrobes & cupboard space.

The Second Floor Master Bedroom is approached from a breezy roof terrace, part open and part makuti-thatched and with comfortable and shady baraza seats and tables. The Master Bedroom runs the entire width of the house and features a Queen-size four poster bed, ceiling fan, ample wardrobe & storage space and an en-suite bathroom.

From the terraces on the Second Floor and Third Floor, there are attractive and uninterrupted views across neighbouring gardens and rooftops to the Lamu Channel and Manda Island.

On the Ground Floor there is an additional large Single Bedroom with antique four-poster bed and adjoining bathroom.

The house is nicely furnished with traditional and antique Swahili furniture and fully equipped with everything you need for your stay. The large Ground Floor kitchen has a fridge/freezer and there is an additional fridge on the First Floor to keep drinks cool. The bedrooms are all fitted with fans and mosquito nets - and bath towels and beach towels are also supplied, as are bath soaps and lavatory paper.

House staff Kahindi and Dixon welcome guests to the house with a refreshing cold fruit juice, and the kitchen is stocked with basic provisions including tea, coffee, drinking water, milk and sugar. The staff will be pleased to help shop for other groceries and provisions, and will cook and serve meals as required.

We’re happy to recommend Maridhiya as perhaps the nicest medium-sized house to rent in Lamu Town – it is ideal for one or two couples or a small family or group and is always very popular.

In common with most other Lamu houses, Maridhiya has steep and unguarded staircases and open roof terraces and is therefore unsuitable for smaller children. We don't accept bookings from families with children of 6 years old and under.

Maridhiya sits in a quiet, elevated position within Lamu’s UNESCO World Heritage Area.

Lamu Fort, Lamu Museum, the Donkey Sanctuary and the many other historic and cultural attractions of the town are all just a few minutes from the house - as are the seafront, the main shopping street and numerous places to eat and drink.

The nearby Lamu House Hotel has an excellent restaurant and licensed bar.
There is good shopping for colourful kickoys, kangas and other local fabrics, together with antiques, traditional Lamu furniture and other gifts and curios all along the main shopping street and seafront.

The house is situated close to Lamu’s historic ‘Kinoni’ whetstone where swords and other weapons were sharpened in past centuries – and which gives its name to the surrounding neighbourhood.

Also nearby is the charming small ‘Tambuni’ Mosque – named after the many small betel nut plantations which still exist in the area. The narrow streets and alleyways are quiet and shady and one of the greatest pleasures of a stay in Lamu is wandering around and exploring the byways of this historic town, and meeting its friendly and welcoming inhabitants.

After working in book publishing in London, I spent several years living on wonderful Lamu Island and designed, built and restored a number of traditional houses there. Now I am based in Nairobi with a young family.

Maridhiya House and our guests are well looked after by housekeepers Kahindi and Dixon - who will do all they can to make your stay as relaxing and enjoyable as possible. They can meet you at the airport and will be pleased to shop, cook your meals and keep the house clean and tidy.

We also have a resident manager in Lamu Town who supervises the house and staff and who is available in case of need.

We don't have a suggested menu as such - but Kahindi is a good cook and has a wide repertoire of dishes. His mild fish curry is always popular and other specialities include seafood dishes such as whole baked snapper, garlic prawns or fried calamari.

Kahindi and Dixon can also show you around Lamu and help to arrange excursions and dhow sailing trips. They live right next door to Maridhiya House and are always on hand to help out. If, at the end of your stay you feel they have done a good job, you might like to offer them a small gratuity.
