Faro, Portugalija

We are located in the little parish of Luz de tavira with less than 4000 inhabitants. Tavira Centre is only a 12-minute drive away. A train stop directly to Tavira Centre is only 1.3km away at Luz station. As with every parish in Portugal, there are large community festivals held every year. Ours at Luz de Tavira occurs in August.

Tavira was founded as long ago as 2000 BC by bronze age civilizations, in the 8th century BC it became one of the first Phoenician settlements in the Iberian West. The old centre of Tavira stands on what was then a peninsula, and the Phoenicians created around it two harbours, temples and massive town walls. It is thought that its original name was Baal Saphon, named after the Phoenician Thunder and Sea god. This name later became the Roman city of Balsa.

In the 17th century, the port on its river was of considerable importance, shipping produce such as salt, dried fish and wine. Following the Great Earthquake of 1755 which was thought to have reached 8.5 - 9.0 on the moment magnitude scale, Tavira was largely reconstructed, hence the graceful eighteenth-century townhouses and mansions that you see today. In the old-town streets on both sides of the river, numerous houses retain fine old doorways with traditional knockers in the shape of hands.

As an important city, Tavira has the services, choices and nightlife of a major city. The city centre is a pleasing place and it’s easy to spend a day or so idling around and drinking coffee in its beautiful cafés. This captivating city is filled with Portuguese charm.

Tavira has a charming historic centre, which is a joy to explore, and discover the rich history of the town. This extensive and varied history is reflected in the diverse selection of historical monuments found throughout Tavira. Contained within the old town are over 36 churches and ancient monasteries.

Tavira itself is a picturesque, relaxed, peaceful town, easily explored by foot with everything to hand. You can take your time on the old streets and alleys on either side of the river, pausing for a seafood lunch caught only hours before. There’s a small, active fishing port and a modern market. Only 3km from the coast, Tavira is the launching point for the stunning, unspoilt beaches of Ilha de Tavira. An enticing assortment of restaurants makes it an excellent base for exploring the Algarve’s eastern reaches.

Tavira is ideally positioned so that the whole of the eastern Algarve can be visited as day trips. To the west of Tavira is the historic city of Faro and the fishing port of Olhão. To the east is Vila Real de Santo António and the lively resort of Monte Gordo. All of these towns are connected to Tavira on the national N125 roadway.

Unlike other cities in the Algarve like Faro or Portimão, Tavira has a large permanent population, so most restaurants and cafes also remain open during the winter. Winters here with its absence of rain through most of the season and pleasantly warm weather makes this one of the best places in Europe to play golf during the cold months.

The municipality of Tavira is rich in gastronomic knowledge and flavours.

To taste Tavira’s heritage you could order an estupeta de atum, either as a snack or a starter. This is a fresh tuna salad with tuna flakes, onion, green pepper and tomato, seasoned with olive oil and vinegar, piled on a slice of bread.

A tuna main course is mucuma de atum, which features salt-cured tuna fillets.

Arroz de marisco (seafood rice) and cataplana de marisco (seafood stew), are Algarve classics, all the tastier in Tavira for the surplus of fresh shellfish. And then there’s octopus (polvo), which is caught in large quantities in Tavira and can be deep fried, grilled or cooked in a risotto.

One of the most popular dishes of the Algarve is Cataplana, a hearty rice and seafood stew that is served in a large copper pot and is shared between two people.

While there are plenty of beaches There are not any water or theme parks located close to Tavira. If you are with children in Luz de Tavira, visiting a water park in the outskirts will definitely worth your while.

In the Algarve, there are no less than five water parks: Zoomarine, Splash & Slide, Aqualand, Aquashow and Atlantic Park.

Sites close to home include:

Ilha de Tavira Beaches

Tavira has a pristine coastline of sandy beaches and turquoise sea waters, which extend along the southern side of the Ilha de Tavira. This island has a continuous sandy beach of over 10km.  There are three beaches on Ilha de Tavira. The most popular is Praia da Ilha de Tavira located at the eastern end of the island and the closest to the town of Tavira, with the most popular beach, the Praia de Tavira. The beach for this town lies past the salt pans and is reached by a ferryboat. Alternatively, there is a year-round ferry that departs from the jetty (weather permitting) at Quatro Águas, two kilometers east of the town center. In the centre, you’ll find Praia de Estreita, which is a little quieter and has fewer facilities. This beach is more isolated and discrete than the others, meaning you are able to enjoy the quietness of the rousing waves and the sounds of the storks far from the massive crowds that visit Tavira every year. To the west you will find Praia do Barril. Children will enjoy the journey, as after parking up on the shore you board a miniature train. This crosses the dunes and creeks until you arrive at the remnants of an old tuna-fishing community. Their huts and homes are now a beach restaurant and mini museum, while the fishing fleet’s anchors have been planted in the dunes as a monument to the old times. The beaches are separated from the mainland by the waterways of the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa and are crossed by regular ferry services. Sun loungers and parasols are spaced thoughtfully apart from the next, and you have a choice of restaurants, many with free Wi-Fi. In the Algarve, lifeguards usually work from July 1st to September 30.

Ria Formosa

Tavira is home to one of the most important wetlands in the world, the Ria Formosa National Park, known for its rich biodiversity with more than 200 bird species that are either permanent residents (purple herons, western swamphens), spend winters here (flamingos) or rest during migrations (spotted redshanks, booted eagles). Visit during the migratory season to see the park teeming with birds from other regions, and keep a watch for the water-dogs, a native species once endangered but now protected by the park. You’ll have more than 17,000 hectares of the landscape to explore. This unique coastal lagoon has an impressive diversity of habitats and landscapes, from barrier-islands, salt marshes, islets, tidal flats, saltpans, dunes, and freshwater lagoons, to agricultural areas and woodlands.

The park incorporates many small fishing communities, and this has ensured the continuation of sustainable fishing using traditional techniques. Found throughout the Ria Formosa are salt flats which produce salt in the most basic method, drying seawater under the intense summer sun.

Suggestions if you arrive early:

Many guests will arrive before the designated check-in time. The good news is that there is plenty to do. We often suggest that guests visit the grocery store and do a small shop. That will give you more time to relax once you've checked in. There are also a few good restaurants for lunch so why not relax and enjoy some of the local food!

Groceries are also only 1 km away at “Supermercado Coviram - Rita”. This is a small supermarket in town. Small but very well stocked including produce, deli and bread.

For a larger supermarket the closest would be “Aldi” in Tavira. Located 6.6 kms from our home.

Gastronomical recommendations:

For breakfast close to our home we would recommend “Pastelaria Assis”. It is located only 1 km away, next door to  “Supermercado Coviram - Rita” Popular with the locals offering a small and simle selection of sweets, bread and small bites.

There are several breakfast options available in Tavira city centre as well such as:

Padaria Vila Doce - Located in Santa Luzia. A great place for breakfast or a light meal. They have a great assortment of freshly baked goods and pastries, including regional delicacies such as fine sweets and sweet potato buns. And also snacks like toasts, sandwiches, pizzas, pastas, soups and salads. It's very well located, on the main avenue, with parking near by, and has a wonderful terrace, with a nice view over the Ria Formosa.

Pastelaria Tavirense - Centrally located in Tavira. Offers a wide assortment of regional sweets. Popular with locals.

They are endless options for dining in the area but if you are looking for something close try “A Carpintaria”. Located only 1.9 kms from our home. A hidden gem, a family run restaurant serves delicious fairly priced food.

Another restaurant very close to home is “Frango da Ria” located only 7.5 kms away. The famous Portugeuse Piri Piri chicken was invented in the Algarve. This restaurant specialized in this dish and many say they do it the best.

For higher class dining we recommend “A Ver Tavira.” This restaurant is located in the central Tavira. The place to go for a modern take and Algarvian cuisine.
