The latest addition to The Enclave (https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/4218435)
’s high-end private accommodation offerings, The Governor’s Retreat was once the official weekend residence of the previous governor of Chiba Prefecture Akiko Domoto and has been completely remodeled from the ground up and furnished with the highest-quality fittings and artwork to create the ultimate rural vacation getaway only about an hour away from downtown Tokyo and 10 minutes from the nearest beach.
The 90m2 ranch house–an incredibly sturdy Lockwood kit home imported from New Zealand–is adjacent to The Enclave’s main house and annex (https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/18452294?s=51) and sits at the edge of the former’s half-acre wooded property. On the outside, it has its own private deck made from Australian eucalyptus hardwood and fenced-in yard equipped with a propane gas grill for barbequing and outdoor get-togethers with friends and family. A commercial insect zapper installed around the corner ensures bug-free evenings even in the middle of summer, and the expansive view of the neighboring rice paddies evokes images of Bali.
The interior, however, is where the true magic of the Governor’s Retreat resides. The first thing you’ll notice as you walk through the oversized sliding glass doors–besides the large collection of original North American Indian and Asian art throughout the house– is the open 30m2 living room, replete with stylish modernist shelves adorned with various ethnic objet d’arts and furnished with a large, comfortable sofa to relax on while you enjoy the fully-equipped home theater system with a pro-grade Epson 4K projector and DALI and Onkyo multichannel speaker setup.
Next, there’s the dining area, which features a stylish solid oak live-edge dining table and chair/bench set as well as luxury dinnerware and table settings. There’s even a bay window with comfortable cushions that you can lie down on and take a nap in the event you eat too much and can’t make it all the way to the couch. Speaking of which, let’s not forget the open kitchen: finished with Canadian bird’s eye maple cabinets, solid copper countertops and hand-beaten copper sink with matching copper pots and pans, and an AEG automatic dishwasher, it’s fully equipped to handle any conceivable meal you could possibly want to turn out and then some. It even has a huge US refrigerator complete with a built-in ice and water dispenser (a feature almost unheard of in Japan).
As you proceed toward the back of the house through the gallery-like hallway adorned with even more unique art, you pass by the Washlet-equipped western toilet and spacious bathroom with a large American-sized whirlpool bath and rain shower, ideal for soaking in after a hard day of relaxing and reveling in Mother Nature. (The custom-fabricated Italian tiles and glass block partition imported from the Czech Republic only heighten the experience.) Next, you will notice that each of the three bedrooms boasts a different theme. The small bedroom on the left, known as the Aviary, has a semi-double bed that’s perfect for children or intimate adult couples and is replete with bird-themed wall art and sculptures as well as locally-sourced driftwood accents. Conversely, the spacious Lunarium master bedroom next door sports a massive full moon ceiling light and queen-sized bed with a Simmons mattress befitting the status of a family matriarch and/or patriarch. Lastly–but certainly not least–the Fairy’s Cove bedroom at the rear of the house features a bay window that has been converted into a rock garden with LED cherry blossom lamps and a driftwood ceiling with glowing LED leaves that will help relax your mind and body as they drift off to sleep in the queen-sized bed and Simmons mattress.
There is also a newly-constructed doghouse next door, which also doubles as a children’s playhouse and adult meditation room. Fully equipped with insulated walls and hardwood floors, a Dyson bladeless fan and heater, track lighting, wall art, iPad wall mount and JBL Bluetooth speaker, oversized dog bed and doggy door, as well as a skylight for natural lighting and comfortable viewing of the gorgeous night sky, it may very well be the most luxurious canine pad in all of Japan (just look at the photos!) to help facilitate an unforgettable bonding experience with your pet and/or kids :) A large enclosed dog run is also located next to the doghouse to allow your dog to roam freely in a safe, comfortable environment.
The Governor’s Retreat–fit for a governor and a perfect fit for you and yours.
