Vieta

Brooklyn, New York, Jungtinės Valstijos

For creative professionals, this has become a sought-after neighborhood with a range of living options available. Clapboard and limestone family homes are found throughout the area, while many of the old industrial buildings have been converted into condominiums, lofts and Bushwick apartments. There are also a few co-ops and walk-ups to add to the property mix.

Bushwick apartments to rent have become increasingly popular too, as more people try and get a taste of the neighborhood's vibrant bar and restaurant scene.

BUSHWICK HISTORY

Surrounded by Bed Stuy on the west, Williamsburg on the north and Ridgewood, Queens on the northeast, Bushwick derives its name from the Dutch word Boswijck that translates as 'little town in the woods' or 'heavy woods.' First established in 1638 by the Dutch East India Company who bought land in the area from the Lenape, by the 1800's it had become home to large breweries opened by German immigrants. They were soon followed by an influx of Sicilian Italian and later Latinos. By the 1950's the breweries had closed, and the area fell into decline.

However in the mid-2000's the city began putting money into the neighborhood through a program known as the Bushwick Initiative, which aimed to improve residents' quality of life. As conditions improved, young professionals and artists began arriving in the area, making Bushwick one of the city's creative centers.

BUSHWICK ATTRACTIONS

Over the last decade, the neighborhood has gained many galleries, and The Bushwick Collective exemplifies this. Inspired by the area's industrial roots, steel company owner Joe Ficalora founded the vast outdoor gallery that promotes the practice of graffiti with large-scale pieces on display. Other galleries in the neighborhood include Momenta Art, an artist-run non-profit organization that aims to foster the dialogue between art and society and Silent Barn that has gigs as well as exhibitions and art installations. Named after a community activist of the 1980's, Maria Hernandez Park is the neighborhood's most significant green space. Here you'll find basketball and handball courts, an outdoor fitness center, and a kid's playground.

BUSHWICK SHOPPING

If you're going shopping in Brooklyn start with Shops at the Loom, an indoor mini-mall brimming with independent stores selling everything from bikes at North Brooklyn Cycles to yoga classes at Loom Studios.

Fashionistas should head to Better than Jam, a clothing store that sells things like Silk-screen sundresses and printed wrap skirts from a range of local independent designers. Alternatively there's Fox and Fawn, a buy/sell/trade clothing store with handpicked vintage as well as designer shoes, clothing, and accessories.

Of course, we can't mention clothes in Brooklyn without mentioning Martin Greenfield Clothiers. The long-standing store is famous for its high end, bespoke suits and has outfitted Eisenhower and Obama.

Fine & Raw has a simple mission to save the world through chocolate, and their shop and espresso bar goes some way to achieving their aim. All their products are made using innovative low-heat techniques to keep the chocolate's raw vitality and flavor.

Lastly, Molasses may be small but it packs a lot into the space. It sells inexpensive used books but is also a café, bar and occasionally an event space. You even have the option to bring along your old books and barter them for drinks.

BUSHWICK RESTAURANTS

Restaurants in Bushwick” style=

Perhaps the most acclaimed restaurant in Bushwick is Roberta's. This Brooklyn pizzeria has served its wood-fired pies to the Clinton's among other celebrities. Order the Famous Original to get a slice of pizza heaven.

Next door to Variety Coffee is Ops, a neighborhood restaurant located in a former garage. It's now a rustic space that serves straightforward seasonal dishes, craft cocktails, and natural wine as well as wood-baked naturally leavened pizza.

Set in a high-ceilinged space that was once a warehouse where MoMA stocked works of art is Faro. Named after a rare kind of grain prized by the Romans, the restaurant uses its wood-burning oven to cook its vegetables, local seafood, and boutique meats. Eight pasta dishes are at the heart of what the restaurant has to offer from Gnocchi Alla Romana to Squid Ink Frascatelli.

BUSHWICK NIGHTLIFE

Nightlife in Bushwick” style=

House of Yes is a nightclub/performance space that offers a genuinely different night out. Attendees can expect to encounter aerialists, magicians, marching bands and tarot card readers. Known for its themed parties with titles like 'House of Love' and 'Bad Behavior,' the venue's immersive performances require the audience to dress up and get into the theme.

The Rookery is a contemporary Brooklyn Pub housed in an industrial space. It has beer garden out-front and 16-foot horseshoe bar inside, which serves a great range of draft beers, and classic and contemporary cocktails. With its vintage New York pennants and wood accents, Pearl's Social & Billy Club feels like it belongs in upstate New York rather than industrial Brooklyn. The retro feel extends to the cocktails, which are all served in mason jars.

By day a coffee shop, Heavy Woods transforms into a bar at night serving local craft brews, a range of whiskeys and on Wednesday through Sunday, New Orleans comfort food.
