Lasalle, Languedoc-Roussillon, Prancūzija

The Town
Lasalle is a typical village in the Cevennes, built alongside 2 kilometres of the Salindrenque river, which has the luxury of 300 days of sunshine per year. Lasalle is located in a valley, known as the “Emmerald Valley” due to the abundance of its vegetation, surrounded by the Cevennes mountains, 15 minutes from Anduze, St. Jean du Gard, and St. Hippolyte du Fort. The larger town of Alès is just 30 minutes away, whilst both Nîmes and Montpellier are 1 hour by car. There are a wide variety of activities for all ages in the area.

Lasalle has a traditional Provencal market every Monday from 7am until 1pm. Other markets can be found locally throughout the week. Most commodities can be found within the village, including a very good grocery shop, often stocked with local produce, 3 bakers, an organic shop, laundry service, tea shop, paper & tobacco shop, chemist, hairdressers, several GP doctors, physiotherapist, osteopath, nurses, local artisan shops (pottery), 2 bars, various restaurants, pizza, mobile butcher 5 days per week, post office, ATM, various places of worship.

Around Lasalle the countryside is ideal for walking, horse-riding, biking, rivers for swimming, canyoning, fishing (permit required for anyone over 10, can be obtained at the town hall).

Abracadabranche in Vabres includes tree climbing with both child friendly and adult courses, various farm animals, some canoes and a picnic area next to the river.
Ecuries de Lou in Monoblet offer horse-riding workshops or trekking.
Ecuries de Saint Jean, opposite Thoiras train station, propose 1 or 2 hours of pony trekking through the Cevennes.
Train à Vapeur des Cevennes, steam train that runs between Anduze and St. Jean du Gard with a stop off at the Bambouseraie to discover the exceptional gardens there. Market day in St. Jean du Gard is Tuesday, there is also a small, but nice Aquarium there.
There's a Silk Museum in St. Hippolyte du Fort located on the outer wall of the building which used to contain British prisoners during the Second World War. Lots of memorial plaques can be found around Lasalle where the Maquis (part of the resistance movement) were very active. Various tours around interesting parts of the town are organized during the summer (French only spoken), but well worth the time (check times with local tourist office). Several local wine cooperatives offer wine tasting. The Languedoc is actually the largest wine making region of France.

Within 30 minutes to an hour's drive, you can visit Grotte des Demoiselles (grotto/cave in Bauzille de Putois), Grotte de Trabuc (grotto/cave in Mialet), accrobranche/tree climbing Forest Park (Bagard). In Alès: Laser Game, bowling, Karting Pôle Mécanique, a public swimming pool with slide, a beach area along the river, or visit a local training mine. Alès also has lots of shopping available both in the town centre and larger outlets on the outskirts.

A little over an hour's drive you can discover the beautiful town of Uzès and stop off at the Haribo sweet factory/museum. Drive to Grau le Roi to visit the Aquarium, or go to the beach, stop off at Aigues Mortes (birthplace of the Crusades) to wander in the cobbled streets or walk around the ramparts.
While there, take a boat ride on the canals of the Camargue to see various wildlife including flamingos and bulls, or go pony trekking on the famous white horses of the Camargue.

Visit the Roman cities of Nîmes (les Arènes, Maison Carée), Arles, or Avignon, or spend the day at the Pont du Gard a Roman viaduct with various water and land activities throughout the summer.

The waterpark Aqualand is a fun day trip to Cap d'Agde. Various other watersports are available between Cap d'Agde and Sète.

A little further afield is Carcassonne to the West, a walled-in Medieval city, or a crocodile farm to the East in Pierrelatte. The Sigean Safari Reserve is always a great day out, between Narbonne and Perpignan. Alternatively, the Barben zoo is located near Salon de Provence. The Spanish border is a 3-hour drive. Just a few ideas…
