When Mary listed her first Airbnb tent near Joshua Tree National Park in California in 2018, she had no idea that in two years she’d be a highly rated Superhost with more than 1,000 guests and multiple bell tents.

Hosting tents, she says, has made it possible for her to “pursue my dream of being an architectural designer on my own terms, as well as connecting people to places like national parks and experiences like camping that I absolutely love.”

Glamping sites—think tent, yurt, or dome—can be affordable and easy to set up. Many tents cost between $500 and $2,000 USD, making it possible to earn back what you put into the site pretty quickly—all while sharing a landscape or lifestyle you love.

Airbnb guests seeking to reconnect with nature are gravitating toward these types of listings as well; nearly twice as many searched for tents on Airbnb in August 2020 than in August 2019.

      Set up your glamping site

Whether you’re looking to add a simple city setup or an otherworldly rural retreat, consider these tips to get started.

      • Find your spot. Does your property have a flat, private clearing with access to mountain trails, serene beaches, starry skies, or popular festivals? You might have an ideal spot, according to Life inTent’s comprehensive guide for creating a “perfect glampsite.” (Before hosting, be sure to check the regulations in your area and follow the local laws.)
      • Pick your tent, yurt, or dome. Think about form and function. The Nova from Boutique Camping offers a unique pole-free interior and large windows. The Fernweh from Life inTents is a “luxury canvas cottage” designed to be set up in 20 minutes. And Bubble Huts offers free consultations to help customers choose the right tent for their needs.
      • Prep your space. Create a flattened area or a wooden platform with a tarp to keep it dry. Provide essential amenities, plus basics like comfortable mattresses and coffee supplies. Think through lighting (solar power and string lights are great), heating (many Hosts use wood stoves or electric blankets), and bathroom facilities (compost toilets are a popular choice).
      • Make being in nature cozy. Aim for 5-star reviews by boosting comfort while guests connect with nature. Add lounge furniture, linens, and a few flourishes like local ceramics and hardy succulents. Glamping guests often rave about hammocks, alfresco tubs or showers, and guidebooks. Just keep it tidy—Superhost Donna, who has a Lotus Belle tent, includes “everything that you need and nothing that you don’t.”

      Set yourself up for success

Once you’ve set up your glamping site, it’s time to prepare your listing for maximum impact and a steady stream of happy guests.

      • Get inspired. You can learn a lot from Airbnb Hosts finding success doing what they love. Check out dome Superhost Daphne in Belgium, yurt Superhost Rachel in Georgia, and tent Superhost Donna in New Zealand, who transformed her idyllic farm into a luxury glamping getaway.
      • Get your listing ready. Highlight what’s unique in your title and listing description; describe the basics, like location and amenities; and take high-impact photos using natural light. You’ll also want to tidy your space and organize the logistics, from setting up your calendar to providing check-in details.
      • Get social. Whether you’re following glamping Hosts, communicating with guests, or posting photos of your listing, engaging with your community on social media—and collaborating with glamping influencers where possible—is a great way to show off your space, build a following, and grow your hosting business.
