Meeting by the boat ramp at Fishermans Paradise, the route for this guided walk includes riverside, bush, village tracks and streets. You'll hear stories of natural environment, flora and fauna (and some surprising local history!) as we wander along the rivers edge with binoculars handy for a closer look at the abundant birdlife. It's likely we'll also see kangaroos and eastern water dragons (and fish jumping in the river). Then, via a track through the bush and over a boardwalk, we visit a favourite fishing spot with fabulous views over the river, ideal for photos reflecting the bush in the afternoon light. Taking a different track from the rivers edge, we'll then wander through the village. Bird life is abundant everywhere in Fishermans Paradise so keep your camera and binoculars handy. Coming back to the rivers edge, we follow a track along the riverside with stunning river vistas as we head back to the boat ramp.

Bushfire update 2020: Some of the tour route was badly burned in recent fires. These days the eco-walk includes stories of that challenging time, and recovery/regeneration.

Other things to note
Leisurely walk, sensible footwear recommended. Families welcome. Children under 2 are free of charge. This walk can also be booked as a private experience (minimum 2 people). Dogs on a leach are welcome on private experiences only.

I’m co-founder of Kotahi Tourism and live in Fishermans Paradise. I've developed and guided (award winning!) tours in both Australia and New Zealand, and love sharing our unique local environment with visitors. I'm generally joined on these walks by my husband Hohepa. We're both from NZ and met when we were working at Te Papa - the Museum of NZ. We've lived in Australia since 2001, initially in Sydney where I managed The Rocks Discovery Museum and Sydney Learning Adventures before we made a 'tree & sea' change to the beautiful NSW South Coast & started Kotahi Tourism in 2013.

Fishermans Paradise boat ramp - meeting place
Conjola and Bunnair Creeks - flowing into Lake Conjola, these lovely 'creeks' are more like rivers with adjacent wetlands. The tracks we follow offer great opportunities for bird-watching, including endangered and vulnerable species.
Nature reserve - affected by bushfire, now regenerating.
Fishermans Paradise village - you'll see abundant wildlife in the gardens and streets of the village.

This was a great walk through the village with lots of background stories about the bushfires and how the community fought together. We saw some interesting birds and Melinda pointed out their unique behaviour. She was very entertaining and lovely, we had a great time.

Another excellent walk and experience. Following the devistating bushfires Melinda and Jo have embraced the reality and impact of these on their local community and environment and were excited to share their joy at seeing how nature is regenerating . A wealth of local knowledge and of the environment made it a fully immersive experience. I learnt a great deal from them both.

This was our second experience with Melinda and Joe , It didn't disappoint. We were so very lucky to see a couple of beautiful dragons (Native lizards) in their natural habitat , not to mention the beautiful birds and trees. Melinda and Joe have a rare insight into the environment at fisherman's paradise. Unfortunately because of the 2019/2020 fires we couldn't see everything. It's wonderful to see the trees regenerating , beautiful green shoots coming through the stark black is a wonder. It's going to be a long road to recovery. Note that both Melinda and Joe were there fighting with their community to save property and wildlife. If you get a chance, do this tour with friends and family. It's so unbelievably worth it. You will not be disappointed.

This was an excellent little your that taught us much about the Fisherman's Paradise community and environment. It was personal and engaging and Melinda and Joe really worked hard to point out many interesting birds and water life in the area. They were both exceptionally warm, welcoming and professional in their approach. I would like to do the lake tour with them next time. Extremely good value tour.

We are very glad, we decided to do the Eco tour with Mel (and Joe). Not only was it very informative, we also had fun and found out some interesting facts. It was a very enjoyable experience, and Mel and Joe were absolutely lovely.

The Eco Walk along Conjola Creek and through the village of Fisherman's Paradise with Melinda and Joe was both informative and delightful. Their knowledge of the history and natural environment of the area showed their passion and keenness for people to understand the importance of preserving and caring for these places. The walk itself was easy - mostly flat, with one short climb up some broad steps. The best part was walking through the tranquil casuarina forest.
